Mattie Foulds (drums & percussion)

Born and raised in the vibrant musical world of Cape Breton on Canada's Atlantic coast, Mattie recorded and toured for many years with prominent East Coast Artists such as The Rankin Family, Rita MacNeil, Natalie MacMaster and Bruce Guthro, and helped to form Beòlach. Since moving to Scotland five years ago he has performed and recorded with many of the UK’s brightest folk stars, including Shooglenifty, Kate Rusby, The Unusual Suspects, Eliza Carthy, Phil Cunningham and Aidan O'Rourke. As a drummer, his big sound and rock solid groove are matched by surprising lyricism and sensitivity, and give an unmistakeable conviction and accessibility to the sound he makes with jazz/tango trio Tangalgo. Mattie provides invaluable guidance to Karine as a home-based engineer and award-winning producer. He just happens to be married to her too.

A word or two from Mattie:

"The musician I’d most like to invite over for tea is LA drummer Jim Keltner because he’s one of the most lyrical players I’ve ever heard and I reckon he’d have great stories.

A piece of music that really moves me is “You are My Sunshine”.

One album I’ll never get tired of is Tom Waits “Closing Time”.

The thing I like best about being a musician is I get to do what I like."
