Su-a Lee: Dialogues

CELTIC CONNECTIONS, GLASGOW

Celebrated South born cellist Su-a Lee draws on her 30 years of musical experience in her stunning debut solo album Dialogues.

Dialogues is a series of musical conversations with 15 of her all-time favourite folk musicians from home and abroad, including Natalie Haas, Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Phil Cunningham, Maeve Gilchrist, Donald Shaw, Hamish Napier, Donald Grant, Duncan Chisholm, Jenna Reid, Patsy Reid, James Ross and Carel Kraayenhof.

Renowned for their euphoric, enigmatic and emotive style, Glasgow’s own Kinnaris Quintet have quickly become a must-see live act. Taking influence from traditional Scottish, Irish, Bluegrass, Classical, Scandinavian and Appalachian music, they create technically dazzling, evocative arrangements, while their performances are laced with a contagious on-stage exuberance and joyful enthusiasm.

This boundary-pushing five-piece will be joined at Celtic Connections by special guests Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart.

Marking 100 years since the death of Scotland’s greatest revolutionary, Celtic Connections produces a night in tribute to the life and legacy of John Maclean and the movement that he stood for. ‘Red Clydeside’ – The John Maclean Centenary Concert features several special guests, including Billy Bragg, Karine Polwart, Eddi Reader, Paul McKenna, Siobhan Miller, Karan Casey, Kapil Seshasayee, Megan MacDonald, Ewen Henderson, Jackie Kay and writer Henry Bell.

Karine Polwart: Come Away In Workshop Start time: 2pm (Doors: 1.30pm) This workshop will last approximately 2 hours 30 minutes, including an interval.

Sing in a spirit of solidarity and hospitality, togetherness and welcome, at this accessible, participative event. No musical or reading experience required. Everything will be taught by ear. Children of 10 years+ welcome with an accompanying adult.

Karine Polwart: A Wee Bird Was Watching Family Workshop : Suitable for 4 – 8 years olds and their families and friends. Start time: 11.30am (Doors: 11am) This workshop will last approximately 1 hour.

A young girl and her mother settle in the woods for a night’s sleep, after a long and tiring journey. But who will keep them safe from harm? A wee bird is watching from the trees. And he knows just what to do. A vividly illustrated telling of a folk tale that speaks to themes of displacement, migration and protection. Join award-winning singer-songwriter Karine Polwart for some magical storytelling and songs to find out how the robin got its red breast.

Acclaimed singer songwriter and Kings Place Artist in Residence Karine Polwart brings her elegant duo partnership with pianist Dave Milligan to London for the first time, with special guest poet Courtney Stoddart, as part of our Scotland Unwrapped opening weekend.

Joining them is acclaimed young Scottish-Caribbean poet and performer Courtney Stoddart in an evening that intertwines the social and political, the historical and the magical, in an exploration of welcome and exile, power and place.
